Chapter Thirteen

THE TEXT FROM BENNETT READ: Just got word. Kathleen Bevins is dead. Definitely foul play.

Chelsea stared at the phone for a moment and then peered around the restaurant.

She leaned over the table and whispered, “Do you think they’re connected? The killings.”

Addie looked at her phone again, as if it would have the answer.

“They’ve got to be,” she whispered. “It would be too much of a coincidence to assume otherwise.”

She pictured the attractive, red-haired woman and tried to imagine who would want her dead.

“The thing is, if anyone would want her out of the picture, it would have been Brent,” Addie said.

“What about Brent’s new fiancée?”

“Yeah, if Brent were still alive,” Addie said. “But with Brent dead, what does the fiancée stand to gain?”

“I just don’t understand who would want to kill both of them.”

“I don’t either,” Addie said and then exhaled heavily. “But the unfortunate thing is, she was the one suspect who might’ve been too obvious for the police to ignore in Brent’s case.”

Chelsea’s shoulders sagged a bit. “Right.”

“Now, I’m not sure there’s any way we’re going to be able to pry the police department’s attention away from Violet and Marvin.”

“Well, just because Kathleen is dead doesn’t mean she didn’t kill Brent. Somebody else could have killed her.”

“That’s possible, but with Kathleen dead, we can’t check her aura. We have to hope that some other evidence surfaces.”

“Small chance of that, if Chief Clemmens is determined to pin Brent’s killing on the Shufflers.”

“I know. This is really bad.” Addie slumped, feeling deflated and a little stunned by the turn of events. “I’ll see if Bennett knows anything more.” She fired off a quick text.

The food arrived, but Addie had lost her appetite. She managed to make it through half of one of the two enchiladas on her plate. Chelsea appeared to be having the same problem and was only picking at her taco salad.

Addie’s thoughts were tumbling around as she tried to come up with a new theory on Brent Bevins’s murder that would force the police to look for the real killer.

Bennett sent another text saying he didn’t have any details yet but was working on getting more info from his source in the police department.

“Do you think Javier could have, you know, done both the killings?” Chelsea asked, her voice so low Addie could barely make out the words.

Addie glanced around. “Let’s get the rest of this to go so we can talk more freely.”

“Good idea.”

Maria brought to-go boxes and took the two credit cards. She barely glanced up and didn’t make eye contact. Normally, Addie and Chelsea would have been asked if the food was to their liking, especially since they’d barely eaten any of it. But Maria was definitely distracted.

When she brought the receipts for signatures, Addie didn’t reach for them. Instead, she waited until Maria looked up.

“Maria, do you and your family need help?” Addie asked quietly.

As much as she wanted to prove the Shufflers innocent by finding the true killer, she also felt sorry that the Hernandezes seemed to be having difficulties.
